BLACK LIVES MATTER (TIME MAGAZINE for April 20, 2015)
The story about #WalterScott by David Von Drehle is encouraging, i guess. The problem is that @TIME is no-longer “timely”, they are nearly irrelevant. Maybe the zine should rename itself #SorryWeAreSoLate.
Why suddenly do #BlackLivesMatter to an empire that wielded enough media power 50 years ago to change public perception back then during the mag’s heyday?
And one more that you won’t answer is: Why should readers, cynical and tired of the disconnect between what we know and what we are told to believe, believe in @TIME ?
Yes, your print sales might rise half a per cent. Sensationalism is the only way to sell a physical copy of a zine in 2015. And the mainstream will call you “heroic” but surely only a few talking heads will proudly don their sheepish loyalty to the industry. It’s a tightrope; my guess is that you’ve fully de-evolved into parody.
So while cops get away with murdering Black men there is no reason to expect a community-in-fear to feel safe because of a magazine cover. There’s also no reason at all for #TIME to pat itself on the back.
